Mid June Book Haul

*nervous chuckle*

So, I bought some books again. Surprise, surprise

In my defence though the books that I bought were cheaper than they usually are on Amazon. So naturally I had to buy them, in case the prices went up again. I know that if I hadn’t bought them, then when I want to buy them at a later date they would cost a fortune and I would have got so mad at myself for not taking advantage of the steeeeaaaaal ……

Or when you buy a book at full price ’cause you really wanted it, and the next day when you are looking at more books you see THAT book and it’s like half the price you paid for it. If only we’d waited a day it would have been cheaper >.<

I Love Amazon.

Literally, I love it.

Books are cheaper. Books come to you (!!!!!). You find so many different books that night not be stocked in bookstores.

I mean I spent just over £20 and I now have 5 new shiny books. I’m a happy bunny. Thank you Amazon!!!!!

I decided that I would do a haul for you guys because due to changing life circumstances I may not have the funds to purchase books. But I might?? I depends how things go. I’m not a fortune teller, but everything might go okay?

So I decided to share my last happy splurge with you guys!! :3 (It wasn’t meant to be emotional but I feel like it is. I can live without buying books but my heart’s not happy about it XD)

Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe) by Neil Shusterman

Synopsis to the first book, Scythe:

A dark, gripping and witty thriller in which the only thing humanity has control over is death.

In a world where disease, war and crime have been eliminated, the only way to die is to be randomly killed (“gleaned”) by professional scythes. Citra and Rowan are teenagers who have been selected to be scythes’ apprentices, and despite wanting nothing to do with the vocation, they must learn the art of killing and understand the necessity of what they do.

Only one of them will be chosen as a scythe’s apprentice and as Citra and Rowan come up against a terrifyingly corrupt Scythedom, it becomes clear that the winning apprentice’s first task will be to glean the loser.

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about the first book Scythe. I also heard that the sequel is just as good. I decided that I would buy the sequel while it was affordable (it went up to like £8.99 once and I cried just looking at it) and then I will hopefully get to it soon. I really want to know what the buzz is all about, but I mean Scythes kinda sound like Grim Reapers sooooooo I’m excited.

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Beware the evil in the woods. . .

In a village at the edge of the wilderness of northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year, an elderly servant tells stories of sorcery, folklore and the Winter King to the children of the family, tales of old magic frowned upon by the church.

But for the young, wild Vasya these are far more than just stories. She alone can see the house spirits that guard her home, and sense the growing forces of dark magic in the woods.

I’ve read some amazing reviews for this book. I haven’t read any books that involve Russian Folklore so this book intrigued me instantly.

The reviews that I’ve read for this book have said that the writing is lyrical and that the story turns dark at times. But in a good way. I’m hoping that there is lots of magic and that spirits play a large role in this book. We need more good ghost books in the world. Also who is the Winter King??? Is he good? Is he bad? I need to know this stuff!

Ink by Alice Broadway

Every action, every deed, every significant moment is tattooed on your skin for ever. When Leora’s father dies, she is determined to see her father remembered forever. She knows he deserves to have all his tattoos removed and made into a Skin Book to stand as a record of his good life. But when she discovers that his ink has been edited and his book is incomplete, she wonders whether she ever knew him at all.

The premise of this book is what got me. Everything you do that is significant is tattooed on your skin… and her fathers ink has been altered….. was he a notorious criminal mastermind??? What did he do? Did he do anything? What’s going to happen? Is there going to be a quest? I’m assuming there’s a quest.

I’ve always clicked on this book but then never bought it. This time Amazon was on to me. They knew I was going to click on it and not buy it again and they were NOT HAVING ANY OF IT!!!! This book was £2 ….. I paid £2 for a 336 page book. It’s a real book. That I paid £2 for.

Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian

Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Queen of Flame and Fury, was murdered before her eyes. Ten years later, Theo has learned to survive under the relentless abuse of the Kaiser and his court as the ridiculed Ash Princess.

When the Kaiser forces her to execute her last hope of rescue, Theo can’t ignore her feelings and memories any longer. She vows revenge, throwing herself into a plot to seduce and murder the Kaiser’s warrior son with the help of a group of magically gifted and volatile rebels. But Theo doesn’t expect to develop feelings for the Prinz.

Forced to make impossible choices and unable to trust even those who are on her side, Theo will have to decide how far she’s willing to go to save her people and how much of herself she’s willing to sacrifice to become Queen.

The UK paperback of Ash Princess came out recently and it was not full price?! Considering I have been anticipating this book for a while…. I bought it.

I’ve heard people say that it’s “Your basic YA” where the princess rises up and saves the day. But I love those kind of books. I eat those books as snacks. I don’t think I’ll ever stop reading them. NEVER!!!

Frostblood by Elly Blake

Enter a world where fire and ice are mortal enemies…

Ruby is a Fireblood. In a land ruled by frost, her very existence is a crime. She’s spent her whole life in hiding.

Until the day Frostblood soldiers raid her village and kill her mother. The day she swears to avenge her people.

She must travel deep into the heart of the enemy, to the court of the Frost King, with only the mysterious warrior Arcus – a Frostblood rebel – by her side. But with alliances between flame and ice strictly forbidden, is Arcus friend or foe?

Ruby will only have one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who took everything from her. But she has no idea just how hot her fire will burn…

This book caught my eye when it was released but I never bought it because it was way back when I literally had a penny to my name. Over time I always saw it but it was waaaaaay expensive and I was all NO! I WON’T PAY £10 FOR ONE PAPER BACK WHEN I CAN BUY THREE FOR THE SAME PRICE!!!!!! Cause I was a salty grill back then…

BUT NOW! This book was literally £4 so I dived for it head first.

I’m very excited about all the books right now tbh.

Not included in the 5 book splurge:

My preorder of A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir came today!

And the cover change is actually beautiful. I’m a little salty that my other Ember editions won’t match it (at all) but pffffft,  I adore this series so it doesn’t bother me really.

Legit though, it is so hard to believe. I’ve always imagined it as this never ending series that I can always trust to be a great read. October is going to be a sad time…….

    1. I know ; _ ; Let’s just stroke our screens when other people post pictures of the new covers and pray that they fall from the sky and land neatly on our shelves. (I’m sure books know parkour okay…. this will work)
Hahaha, no no. It’s truueeeeeee. Because the Kingdom of Ash release date is getting closer…. pretty sure that’s an end-of-the-world event 😀

    1. YEEEEEEE! I want to read so many books at the moment and I’m starting and stopping and can’t decide!!!
I’m so tempted to buy the new covers for the An Ember in the Ashes series both because they are gorgeous and because then my set would match and I love my bookshelves enough to do that for them. Plus I’m loving the series anyway so having extra copies is no fault in my book (hehe… book related puns) Maybe I’ll ask for them for Christmas??? (Shhhhh, I know. But Christmas is so much closer than everyone thinks… 167 days isn’t that long)

  2. It’s so fun getting new books, I’m glad you got the opportunity to find a few good deals. I hope you enjoy all the books you picked up (I really want to read Scythe as well) and I hope everything in your changing life circumstances works out for the better. Best wishes!

    1. I don’t quite know what it is? I shouldn’t like getting new books because my TBR is basically a bloodthirsty dinosaur bigger than our solar system… but yet I always get excited about new books? Perhaps I want to get eaten by a dinosaur XD
Scythe seems like one of those books that you’re not sure if it’s your kind of book but then you read it and find that you friggin’ love it 😀
Thank you, I’m still sorting things out but I think I’m happier with what I’ve decided to do and I’m hoping everything is going to be much better 😀 Best Wishes to you too!

  3. Bear and the nightingale was an average read for me to be honest. I hear the next book in the series is better. Ash princess seems to be in everybody’s list these days. I need to check it out soon. Sabaa Tahir is an author I have yet to check out. Hopefully soon.

    1. I think the Bear and the Nightingale series is three books?? So far?? I don’t know, as long as they get better I’m here for it 😀
Sabaa Tahirs’ writing is amazing! She’s one of my fave authors, even though she’s only ever released 3 books (all for the Ember series). But I enjoy them greatly, I hope you do too! :3

  4. So the covers for Ink and The Bear and The Nightingale are GORGEOUS how have I not seen them before? I want to add them to my TBR, but I’m not *really* in the position to be buying new books. . . . . . .

Darn it. You make me want to buy new books. I especially have my eye on Summer of Salt (probably the release I was most excited for in 2018) and Legendary!

My favorite site to get books from is Thriftbooks! You get $5 off for every $50 you spend, they have lots of sales, and a lot of books are online like $3-$5. (This is for older releases, though. But it’s great for really hyped books you never got around to reading.) I also like Book Depository for new releases, but I live in the US and they kind of take a while to get to me.

    1. I know right?? Ink is really shiny!
      Hehe, soooooooorry. :3
I keep hearing about Summer of Salt but I haven’t looked it up yet, I might have to go do that. I haven’t finished Caraval yet! I got half way through it last year but then I didn’t read any further. I don’t know why. From what I can remember I was enjoying it. I need to pick it up again me thinks.

I’ve heard of Thriftbooks before! Sounds like they have some pretty great steals! *grumbles about missing out on sales*
And I’ve heard a lot about Book Outlet???
      But alas, I live in the UK so I can’t take advantage of the seemingly massive book sales ; _ ;
I haven’t ordered from Book Depository before but they have books on there that Amazon are always out of stock of, so it’s likely I’ll give them ago. It’s very rarely Amazon fails me. But it happens.
