Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Pull Us Out of The Void

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

Today’s topic is “Books That Pull You Out of a Reading Slump!”

We all know what the dreadful reading slump is. It’s a readers worst nightmare come to life. A reading slump is not only a horrid experience for everyone, but it can be especially wounding to every reading plan you’ve ever made. And lets not even talk about how dangerous it is to the TBR.

A reading slump is not a book buying slump.

The longer we stay away from reading, the stronger the TBR grows.

And when you finally break free from the reading slump, you have to try to “tame” your TBR again, which usually goes a little like….

So, here’s a list of books that saved me from a reading slump!

Also, the covers are linked to Goodreads if you want to go add them! (As if you didn’t have a big enough TBR to deal with already)

The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – I loved everything about this series! It has in fact, made me a little more interested in maybe reading some Sci-Fi. But Obsidio kinda gave me a book hangover soooo. I was alive enough reading wise to read the whole series in like 3 days but I fell back into a slump a straight after. I hold the Illuminae series pretty close to my heart now.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer – This is such a soft series. A soft- feel inducing panic ridden series. Which I adore! While there was this amazing plot and soft, precious characters there was also the terror that maybe everything will go wrong. I remember going on a reading spree after reading this series… those were good times.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater – I read this one recently (amid all the fluffy contemporary I’d been reading) and if I had to condense the reasoning of how this book relived me of a reading slump, I would say… the writing. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that was so lyrical and beautiful. Full Review.

Angelfall by Susan Ee – The combination of real world and angelic myth felt pretty real. Although I still have some questions about things, I still really enjoyed this series and want to read it again… I know that there are a lot of dystopian books and the genre is considered over done, but I feel like this trilogy is a good reason as to why it should perhaps make an adapted appearance into YA.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black – I think Holly Black’s writing is just magical. This book wasn’t what I was expecting, and I’m glad because it was amazing! I haven’t really delved into the world of Vampire books, but if they can be as beautiful as this one was then 100% I will read them. But the expectations are now pretty high…. because Holly Black has set the bar pretty dang high.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas – I don’t think this one needs much explaining because most people love this series. But I adore the characters (most of them *glares at Arobynn*) and the world and the magic and ….. basically everything???

Which books brought you out of those ever haunting reading slumps? Are any of them on this list? Do you also have issues controlling your TBR when you’re slumped?

    1. I’d read literally anything Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman write together…. it could be about plain old potatoes and I’d be down.
The pace is fast in those books right?? Like whiplash fast! Like, you didn’t see that coming fast! But not so fast that you, the reader, get left behind…. I love them so much.
I just want to re-read all the things but my TBR won’t allow that ; _ ; *ominous sound effect from the bookshelves*

            1. OOoo yeah. I can see that being a problem. Let’s hope it’s the best gift ever! 😀 Yes! Plan ahead! That’s a great idea! I need to plan ahead… I already feel my impending doom approaching.

  1. The Illuminae books would be great for a slump, I would think, with the unique structure and how fast the story moves, even though they’re huge books. Gemina was my favorite and I think that one in particular might help me with a slump! Then I’d have an excuse to re- read it! 🙂

    1. Illuminae is definitely the one to go to when you need to be dragged out of a slump. Gemina was my favourite of the trilogy too!!!! 😀 I want to re-read it soon I think… I just feel like reading some super good space books that I know I’m gonna love! 😀

        1. No, I haven’t. I’ve seen it bobbing around in the bookish community though! If it’s relatable to Illuminae in anyway… I must have it!! I’ll try get my hands on it soon… now I’m excited!!! Thank you for the rec!! 😀

  2. Yes! Illuminae is phenomenal and the perfect way to get out of a slump! Have you listened to the audiobook?

I was in a mini slump last week, but I’m re-reading Tower of Dawn and it’s helping a lot ^^

    1. Yes it is! Easily one of my favourite books of all time! No, I haven’t. But I’ve heard the audiobooks are really good. I might give them a go!
I’m gonna start my Throne of Glass re-read soon, in preparation for KoA… I’m so ready but also so not ready XD

  3. Yay The Scorpio Races! Ugh such a good book every time you mention it I feel like I want to reread! ❤️ I’m also thinking about rereading Illuminae and trying the whole series out, but I’m not really in a slump right now. I did go into a pretty big slump earlier this summer which stunk because I had so much time to read and no motivation! Scythe was the book that revived me. When a book can do it, I think it deserves even more than a 5 star rating.

    1. T’was an amazing book! I’m most likely going to mention it a whole lot XD YES ILLUMINAE!!!!! *chanting begins in the mountains* I really liked Gemina and Obsidio, I hope you do!
There should be a 6 star rating, with the 6th being like the Ultimate star. For books we love and super flail over. Goodreads better take notes XD
