Now, just a warning. In typical Lin fashion this review will be a complete and utter mess. But that’s fine!!! *nervous laughter*
ON WITH THE MESS REVIEW!
I absolutely adored the Seoul setting! I adored how lovingly and naturally the Korean Mythology was woven into a modern day setting.
I loved how it wasn’t just one “myth” existing in this world (this is weird to write since it’s set in our world?? I write to many fantasy book reviews!), although the Gumiho naturally took the spotlight here. I like that Shaman’s and Dokkaebi (a type of Goblin) were included and set loose to cause all kinds of havoc.
I feel the pacing was pretty good, what with all the different mysteries throwing themselves in your face every time you step round a corner.
I really liked both of our protagonists too! The dual POV format worked really well for this story, since seeing both Jihoon and Miyoung’s standpoints was mega important so that you, the reader, knew how they were both feeling.
I also really loved Dubu. He was a good pup. Brought these Jihoon and Miyoung together. Dubu gets all the points. All the treats. SOMEONE GIVE HIM SOME TREATS!
I really loved Jihoon’s Halmeoni (his grandmother), she was such a star. I want a whole book about her tbh. She was my favourite character, and I’m not about to drop any spoilers but, she made me very sad. Like, a stepped on cracker. I’m just crumbs now. Sad Crumbs.
Now. The ending.
I’ve rated this book 4.75/5. It would be 5/5.
But.
The Epilogue.
Before the epilogue, I was crying happy tears. After the epilogue I was very confused.
Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t ruin the rest of the book, I still loved it!
But, to me, the epilogue felt a little empty? Kind of like it was an after thought? It’s clearly meant as a build up for book 2, but it’s only 2 and a half pages long. So there wasn’t much building?
I’m still likely going to pick up book 2, I loved the world and the characters and found the writing to be quite smooth, so no matter how confused I am, I’m still excited!
Rating: 4.75/5
