If you’ve read some of my previous blog posts, you’d know that I withhold ZERO screech power when it comes to Standalone books! Z-E-R-O!

And don’t get me started on fantasy standalone books, that’s when my asthma kicks up because of the sheer, unstoppable POWER of my screeches. I just can’t help myself. There is no stopping the screech.

If you put a standalone fantasy in front of me, I might not start screeching immediately for the sake of polite manners. But you should know, the screech is bubbling under the surface. and it’s not going anywhere…

Wildlife gif. Falcon slowly turns it head forward, glaring down at us.

And sadly, the only places the screech can be let loose into the world is: in the comfort of your own home – hidden from the world who wouldn’t understand the screech, or in the presence of other book lovers – who would either: answer your screech with one of their own (and together you become the mighty ROAR of book dragons, awakening all other book dragons who are usually sleeping in their book hoards) or they nod in understanding, cheering on your screech, a couple of “same”‘s sound around the group.

Now I love me a good ol’ fantasy series. I love 7 books worth of panic, chaos and literal soul crushing cliffhangers. (but I also like my fantasy series with a sprinkle of softness. give me that “once-evil monster dude who has reluctantly joined the hero’s rag-tag crew gives one of the MC a flower because they’re having a hard time with trying to save the world and stuff.” DOUBLE POINTS if the once-evil dude blushes up a storm and gets all “IT’S JUST A STUPID FLOWER! IT DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING! IT’S NOT A REPRESENTATION OF ALL MY PENT UP EMOTIONS AND MADDENING NEED TO BE LOVED! … stop looking at me.”)

But…

Y’know. Those cliff hangers all add up in the end, and honestly my soul is just fragments at this point. We got to take a break every now and then folks! (or we’ll become soul-fragments that are so small, we’re basically dust. thanks cliff hangers. SO KinD oF yOU!)

Which is where the Standalone books come in!

And so, my good friends, I am going to give you a nice little list of Standalone Fantasy books! With a few bonus Standalone books at the end! Which would probably class more as Magical Realism than Fantasy, BUT YAY FOR MORE BOOKS! More standalone books!

I will add the links to their respective Storygraph and Goodreads pages so you can learn more about them! (and add them to your ever growing TBR! “What harm is a few more books going to do?” the reader said. “Make me angry and sad. I’ll be Sangry.” The Tbr responded.)

Some of these are older books but hey ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ gold never goes out of date!

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl, in which readers and bloggers come together to squeal, cry and ooo ‘n’ aaa at books.

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson (a.k.a. one of my all time favourite books ever! and holds the No. 1 spot on the fave Standalone’s list too…)

Magical libraries housing dangerous Grimoire full of forbidden and ancient magic. An age old mystery/evil plan that unfolds over the course of the book, keeping you hooked in and in need of all the answers right thIS SECOND! Magic is here to stay! Elisabeth is an apprentice librarian who knows how to slice and dice with a sword. Sorcerer boi Nathaniel is a soft boi with a Emerald cloak that matches the colour of his magic *a dramatic boi*. His butler/demon servant Silas is a pure delight that must be protected, but can destroy everything if he wants. But not Nathaniel, who can’t wear his clothes properly without Silas. There is the softest of romance in here too! So soft. So perfect. Nathaniel calls Elisabeth “an absolute menace” so many times. It must be true love!

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson (just go to Margaret Rogerson for your Standalone fantasy, soft boi love interest needs. She delivers all the time)

IF YOU LIKE YOUR FAE SPOOKY, POTENTIALLY EVIL AND OVERALL UNNERVING TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF THEN GET THIS BOOK! And also get it if you like “soft prince who thinks he’s beautiful is very upset at having been seen by the beautiful artist lady that he’s infatuated with, without his glamour on.” ALSO ART PLAYS A LARGE ROLE IN THIS BOOK! WE LOVE BOOKS WITH ART IN THEM AROUND HERE! (even though I have no artistic talent… at all *sobs*)

Also the currency of Fae to the humans who can create (because the Fae can’t create at all – they kinda literally die if they try) is enchantments. We love some quirky enchantments that might or might not have us turning into toads if we step out into the moonlight.

Beyond a Darkened Shore by Jessica Leake (my gosh this one was an adventure)

A good ol’ enemies to lovers book! This one is set in Éirinn, which is another name for Ireland (ye ol’ fashion). We’ve got Pagan gods popping up causing trouble in a land that has more or less become Christian, we’ve got gosh darn vikings raising hell on the coasts, bringing with them the strength of their Norse gods (the gods themselves just kinda chill and watch the MC’s do all the hard work… as they usually do). Our MC’s Mama is a Pagan goddess, and so MC has some dark, spooky powers. And her greatest, most hated enemy (but also she loOOooves him) was gifted uncanny strength from his gods, except his comes with a price. AND TOGETHER! These two are going to fight and rid their world of evil giants (it’s the Jötunheimr *mythology loving heart explodes*) that keep crushing people and eating them.

Basically, if you love mythology, especially Norse. This one. This one is for you.

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller (oooo more enemies to lovers, is that what this list is now?)

That cover, honestly gets me every time. Never has a cover said “I’m going to stab you in the middle of your Gothic library while the velvet curtains swoosh inward from the windows” louder than this book.

Also there are literally only 3 things (from this books synopsis) that will hook you in immediately:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

BuT THEn sHe FaLls iN lOve wIth hIM, because she’s trying to protect him from assassins all the time and to do that she needs to spend time with him and – oop “he’s pretty cute! !!!!!! WHAT!!!!”

A Forgery of Fate by Elizabeth Lim (ART AGAIN!!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAA!)

Mc’s out here painting fake art to support her famalam and then some dude, who happens to be a lord, rocks up like “heeyyyyyyy want to use your super skill for something a little more illegal exciting?? I’ll look after your family! Don’t worry about it!”

Chaos insues!

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh (about the make us The Readers Who Fell Between the Pages!!!)

You’re looking at the classic story of “Hmmmmm our village seems to get a lot of storms?? What shall we do about it? HHMMMMMMM! I KNOW LET’S SACRIFICE PEOPLE TO THE SEA GOD!!!!” Our MC dived on in there to help her bro out and then finds herself in the Spirit Realm only to find out that the god they’ve been sacrificing people to HAS BEEN ASLEEP THIS WHOLE TIME!!!!

Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang (A Dark Academia delight in one delicious bite!)

Those nasty mages don’t like our MC being the first woman to become a High Mage and they want to make her life miserable. RUDE!!! But MC is crafty! And they handed her the perfect side kick!!!

ian mckellen GIF

Two underdogs teaming up to uppercut the higher ups and reveal all their nasty little secrets (although the secrets are quite big actually….. HUGE even)!

Doesn’t get much better than that!!!

Do you guys like a standalone or do you enjoy constant, prolonged suffering?? 👀 Have you read any good standalones?? Fantasy or otherwise?? Please share?? PLEASE!!!!
